How a refugee family settled in Bombay, earned billions from the Opium Wars, saved Jewish families from the Nazis - only to throw away their fortune and now their name is just a footnote in history
Pretty cool! A fun fact: I was walking around Kala Ghoda in Bombay and came across a beautiful blue-colored synagogue. After doing some Googling, I discovered it was the Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue, funded by Jacob Sassoon. It's fascinating to see history reflected in the buildings around our city!
You have chosen an interesting niche Aditi! A lot of people ignore economic history nowadays. This is an interesting topic. I didn't know about Sassoon's role in Triangular trade. Thanks for sharing :)
Boss! This is so well written. I am at least 3 years away from reading a book but I am putting this up in the wishlist. Thank you so much for letting me know of this, I would have surely missed this otherwise. A fab fab post.
This family lived, thrived & died during times of such peril
Beautifully written
In my circles they are best known for owning old hagada and other Jewish books.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment ❤️
Fascinating and well written Aditi. We live in unprecedented time of peace and cross border movement.
This story reminds me of Ibis Trilogy by Amitava Ghosh, worth a read for anyone who found this story interesting.
